During Sojrn’s adult study abroad in Siena, Italy, the focus is on wine, one of the region’s most important cultural products. The weekly curriculum is filled with daily activities, workshops, and social gatherings that will teach you everything from how wine is made to its characteristics and the many ways to appreciate it. The two-week Sojrn is designed for travelers who plan to spend most of their time enjoying an immersive travel experience without working remotely.

You'll Learn

The foundations of winemaking, from harvest and fermentation to bottling and aging.

The ways that different tasting techniques like sniffing, swirling, aerating, and sipping are utilized to discover different facets of a wine.

How certain agricultural factors like soil composition and climate influence aromas and flavors in wine.

How to speak to your personal preferences so you can continue to confidently order, taste, and enjoy wine!

How to approach food and wine pairing, such as Chianti with tomatoes or Brunello with mushrooms, truffles, and meat.

What's Included

Along with the standard included accommodation options of a private one–bedroom apartment or a private room in a shared apartment, you can also make your own arrangements.

Led by knowledgeable guides, Sojrn plans two to three weekly educational workshops, events, and activities ranging from learning how wine is made to taste profiling and pairing dishes.

With the help of expert sommeliers, local chefs, and new friends, Sojrn plans two to three activities and events each week, ranging from cooking lessons to social gatherings.

Sojrn arranges the time and provides the space to connect with new friends and build community.

Your Chapter will include two Sojrn Hosts who foster a positive and strong group dynamic while ensuring you are able to fully immerse yourself in the local Tuscan culture.

Social events for Chaptermates to get together, including weekly meetups, a welcome meal, farewell dinner, and more.

You’ll be given access to an online portal and receive pre-Chapter materials full of useful resources designed specifically for your Tuscan wine experience, group, and itinerary.

Personal WiFi hotspots provide you with internet access wherever you are.

Airport pickup and Hosts on hand throughout day one ensure that the check-in process is smooth and hassle-free.

$4,599 | A private one-bedroom apartment that comes furnished with a double bed, WiFi, kitchen, and space to work or relax. If you sign up with another person with the intention of sharing Private Housing, one person should book the Private Housing option, and one person should book the No Housing option.

A week in the life

Please note: Chapter activities, events, excursions, and optionals are updated and refreshed throughout the year and subject to change based on the weather, the season, and Siena’s many cultural celebrations.

The following is an example week.

Monday

Today you’ll have two different wine experience optionals to choose from. Set off north with Chaptermates and hike through olive groves and vineyards for a wine tasting in the medieval fortress of Monteriggioni. Or, head south through some of Tuscany’s most celebrated hillside landscapes to Montepulciano for a Vino Nobile tasting.

Tuesday

Master the basics with a wine buying and ordering workshop so that you can navigate a wine list and communicate with servers or sommeliers with confidence. Then, if you’re in the mood, climb a medieval tower with views of San Gimignano’s Chianti region, have a saffron farm lunch, and walk alabaster-infused Volterra.

Wednesday

If you’re up for a colorful local scene, join your friends and take a peek into Tuscan life and culture on a morning market run. Then, that afternoon, we’ll visit an Etruscan cave for a vertical tasting of the same wine from different vintages to understand how wines evolve.

Thursday

Join our favorite Tuscan family of Chefs and venture to a Certaldo hunting cottage for an optional to learn the ancient techniques of pasta-making. If you’re up for more adventure that afternoon, meet in Piazza San Domenico for a walk through city streets and a guided tour of the Duomo di Siena.

Friday

Today, in your wine pairing workshop, you’ll learn about the relationship between food and wine and how combining the two in certain ways enhances the experience of both. Later in the day, unwind with the group over an aperitivo at one of our favorite little Tuscan bars.

Saturday & Sunday

Your weekend is free, so it’s time to meet up with some of your fellow Sojrners and head out to explore. Nothing beats a couple of days on the water; consider making the trip out to the kaleidoscopic cliffside beauty of Cinque Terre for some Mediterranean marveling.
